  • Sardines are a fish rich in omega 3 fatty acids that promote cholesterol regulation and help the circulatory system.
  • They have a high calcium content, because when the can is subjected to a thermal sterilization process, the spine softens and the calcium passes into the fish meat.

Sardines in Tomato Minerva

Raw material

The sardine is one of the most popular fish in Portugal. They generally have around 14 cm of length and are mainly characterized by the silve scales in their belly, which they use to reflect and bling the predators. They can be found in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea in large migrating banks.

The sardines are caught by the purse seine method, which is in total respect of the environment.

Preserve preparation

The sardine for MINERVA preserves is fished in the best time of the campaign, between September and November, in which it reaches its maximum point of size and fat. At the factory, they’re selected and canned by hand, adding just a delicious tomato sauce to give more flavor and texture to the preserve.  The  MINERVA sardines are faithful to the tradition of the Portuguese traditional method. According to this method, the pre-cooked, before being canned and, to finalize the process, is sterilized at a temperature of 118ºC, guaranteeing the product conservation.

Conservation, use and harmonization

These canned sardines can be stored in a cool, dry place, with no need to be placed in the fridge. They can be directly consummed from the can, with or without side dish, without need to cook or prepare. Once the can is open, if it is not completely consummed, it’s recommended taking the sardines out and storing them in the fridge for a maximum of 48 hours.

It’s recommended to consume at room temperature as an appetizer, along with red wine or simply in a sandwich as a quick, nutrititve snack.
